The Ether tutorial

Eight short chapters, from the one rule the interpreter follows to the 51 words the rest of the language is built from. Every example runs in your browser; change it and run it again.

  1. The step rule: values, instructions, macros; numbers, text and arithmetic
  2. Lists: writing, running and taking apart lists; frozen and thawed
  3. Names: =, =>, the macro table, scope
  4. Decisions and loops: comparing, either, while, foreach, map, recursion
  5. Tables and text: the subject-on-top rule, tables, text words
  6. Errors and functions: exceptions, trust, words that keep their meaning
  7. Processes: queues, copies, fork
  8. Under the hood: the 51 kernel words and the language written in Ether

Each chapter ends with exercises. Each exercise shows the output a correct answer prints; an answer is hidden under it if you get stuck.

The word list gives every word the tutorial uses, with what it takes from the values stack and what it leaves.
